It is difficult to read through the dialect of this era and I have to read some of the passages several times to fully understand the language. The book is not just about a dog but a dog, a community of people, and most profound, the sad relationship between a father seeking to reach out to his son. The ending was bittersweet and for those of you who love animals, love dogs this book will fill your heart with emotion. A fine, fine read. I suggest you do some researching on the author.
Very fascinating and if it wasn't for an accident, he would probably had never written this book. It's been a long time, but "Thunder" is now available in DVD. In it, you will see sheepdogs border collies at work -- they are very intelligent animals, but can be difficult pets needing much attention and exercise. I am so enamored of them, that when my wife and I recently went to England, we arranged to see a sheepdog trial -- it was just like the movie.
For me, the book is inferior to the film, but keep in mind that the book is really juvenile fiction, while the film is more about a widower, his son, and a good dog gone bad.https://defno.tk
Bob Son of Battle by Alfred Ollivant - AbeBooks
The writer's insights into the dog's thoughts and feelings comes through beautifully and opens the heart to them in the reader. The progress of the story was confusing for me at first, but I did eventually see where the author was going with it. This amazing story is one not to be missed. First published in it went on to become a classic in both the UK and the US.
It is a story of good and evil and how good prevails. Two sheepdogs, totally different in looks, temperament, and purpose, vie for the Shepherd's trophy admids an ongoing feud from their owners where jealousy, hatred and covetous reign. This may be a fine book, but the listing has my name down as one of the authors, and that is not the case. How did my name become attached to it?

Bob, Son of Battle, was my first experience in reading about a "sympathetic villain," and even now, decades later, the scenes involving Adam McAdam and his Red Wull still resonate strongly in my head. Not really a children's novel Aug 13, Rachel Brown rated it liked it Shelves: awesomely-depressing , children-s , the-dog-always-dies. Two feuding sheep farmers express their hatred and rivalry by entering their respective dogs in sheep-herding contests.
It climaxes with a sort of Valentine Day Doggie Massacre, which must be read to be believed. I excerpt it below: view spoiler [ Up and down the slope the dark mass tossed, like some hulk the sport of the waves.

Black and white, sable and gray, worrying at that great centrepiece. Up and down, roaming wide, leaving everywhere a trail of red. Gyp he had pinned and hurled over his shoulder. Grip followed; he shook her till she rattled, then flung her afar; and she fell with a horrid thud, not to rise. While Grapple, the death to avenge, hung tighter. In a scarlet, soaking patch of the ground lay Big Bell's lurcher, doubled up in a dreadful ball.
And Hoppin's young dog, who three hours before had been the children's tender playmate, now fiendish to look on, dragged after the huddle up the hill. Back the mob rolled on her. When it was passed, she lay quite still, grinning; a handful of tawny hair and flesh in her dead mouth. So they fought on. Thus he would appear momentarily, like some dark rock amid a raging sea; and down he would go again.
